Design firm Snøhetta has created Fuglemyrhytta, a self-service cabin in a forest outside of Oslo. It has become a pit stop for hikers as they pass through, with thousands of people already visiting or spending the night, according to the firm. The cabin is open all year and can be booked on the Norwegian Trekking Association’s (DNT) booking system.

Near to a scenic viewpoint of Vettakollen, the cabin is only accessible by trail, however it is close to the Vettakollen metro stop, which connects to central Oslo. About 16 people can spend the day there, while ten people can stay overnight. Since opening in late 2018, the cabin has usually been booked out with travellers looking for a rest along the trails of the Nordmarka forest

The cabin is equipped with an oven and stove so that travellers can stop and enjoy making a meal. Outside the cabin is an outhouse and a woodshed.

Fuglemyrhytta is owned by the City of Oslo, but there are plenty of cabins and huts throughout the country where hikers can stop for a rest. As part of the Norwegian Trekking Association, local members groups around the country operate 550 different cabins around the country that can be rented out by travellers. Some of the incredible places include egg-shaped cabins in the northern destination of Hammerfest, and many more. Find out more about the cabins here.
