Wah Fung Chinese Goods Centre

Wan Chai & Northeast Hong Kong Island

This very local Chinese department store has everything from ginseng to silk baby slippers and acupuncture models to calligraphy brushes. Crowded, dusty and entirely non-English – in fact many of its staff speak Fujianese – it's a fun place to poke around for gifts without the hassle of bargaining.

Wah Fung was Hong Kong's largest department store when it opened in 1963. It is best known for being part of a building (Kiu Kwan Mansion) that served as a hideout for underground communists during the 1967 riots.
