Dubrovnik's Summer Festival (mid-July to mid-August) is the most prestigious summer festival in Croatia and has taken place every year since 1950. A five-week programme of theatre, concerts and dance is presented on open-air stages throughout the city. The opening ceremony takes place on Luža Sq and usually includes fireworks and a band.

In addition to attracting the best national artists and regional folklore ensembles, the programme usually includes one or two big-name international artists. Theatre productions feature the plays of Marin Držić, Shakespeare, Molière and the Greek tragedians. Tickets are available from the festival office on Placa or on-site one hour before the beginning of each performance. You can also reserve and buy them on-line.

The Feast of St Blaise (3 February) is another city-wide bash marked by pageants and processions. Carnival festivities heralding the arrival of Lent in February are also popular.
