Many of Avignon's charms can be enjoyed on foot around the city, but for those chasing more active pursuits, its environs can be appreciated from horseback, kayak or the sky. Peripatetic types can go for a wander beyond the city's confines, hitting golf balls along the way. Or not.
Ball hitters have the option of two public courses, 9 or 18 holes, at Golf de Chateaublanc (04 90 33 39 08; www.golfchateaublanc.com). Novices can get help with a free session each Sunday from - . Also on site are a restaurant, meeting room for work days, plus a few practice zones.
Go horse riding for kicks at Centre équestre et poney club d'Avignon (Ile de la Barthelasse, 1083, chemin du Mont-Blanc; 04 90 85 83 48; www.cheval-avignon.com). Kids aged 4 and over are welcome.
Both the GR42 and GR63 (Grande Randonnée) pass by Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, an easy walk west and over the river. The GR42 goes southwest to Montfrin, meeting up with the GR6 and then going southeast to Tarascon and the Alpilles. Taking the GR42 north will take you through Roquemaure and Laudun. The GR63 goes west, alongside the A9 autoroute and then to Pont du Gard and beyond. Mont Ventoux is a daytrip option for hikers.
The local kayak club, Jeune Canôé Kayak Avignonnais (Moulin Notre Dame; 04 90 86 96 42), can point paddlers in the right direction.
All of Avignon can be seen from 4000m (13,000ft), parachute at the ready. Centre école régional de Parachutisme Languedoc-Méditerranée (Aérodrome de Pujaut; 04 90 26 41 83; www.skydive-pujaut.com) offers skydiving and parachute jumps.
