French pleasures can be indulged in any time, although many Francophiles swear spring is best. Weather-wise in Lyon you'll experience hot and sultry days in summer, and cold, foggy days in winter. In summer you're far enough from the coast to avoid the beach-going crowds, but are reasonably close to alpine hiking opportunities; in winter you're well placed for the winter-sports smorgasbord of the Alps.

Climatic factors aside, you could always plan a trip around Lyon's festivals and gastronomic temptations - these abound year-round. If you do choose summer however, be aware that a number of shops and restaurants (including most bouchons , the small bistros for which the city is renowned) take their congé annuel (annual closure) in August and may be closed for at least two weeks.

Weather

Lyon's climate is affected by that of the Mediterranean and also by the much colder Rhône Valley and adjacent mountain regions. Spring and autumn can be very pleasant, although the temperatures can remain cool-ish and there's some decent rainfall (pack an umbrella). In summer the weather is much warmer and sultry, with average highs around 27°C (80°F). From December to February the daytime temperature can be nippy, hovering around 7°C (45°F), and the city is often wrapped in a heavy mist - perfect weather for whiling away an afternoon sampling local cuisine in a cosy bouchon (bistro).
