This tiny seaside resort has the west coast's biggest buzz after Ajaccio. The setting is superb; inland, sheer pink cliffs tumble into a turquoise sea while over the Golfe de Porto the crags and cliffs of Les Calanques and the exceptional coastal wilderness of the Scandola nature reserve fret the skyline. Packed in summer but deserted in winter, Porto makes a good base for exploring both sites, and the mountainous back country too. The village is split by a promontory, topped by a restored Genoese square tower, erected in the 16th century to protect the gulf from Barbary incursions.
