The main international airport in Lahore will close its main runway for 12 hours a day from Saturday while engineers install a new fly-by-wire Instrument Landing System.
The system uses radio waves and other technology to help planes land safely in low visibility, a common problem in Lahore, which is badly affected by the fog which builds up on the Gangetic plain every winter. The system was reportedly donated to Pakistan by an unknown Gulf country, and it may prevent hundreds of delays and cancellations every year.
