About Emily
I'm a freelance journalist journalist from the United States, currently based in Vienna. Before moving to Austria in 2021, I spent four years living in Berlin; before that, I was a staff journalist based in Washington, D.C. My main focus as a journalist is on politics and the rise of populism, which I've written about for publications including The Atlantic, Politico, The New York Times and Foreign Policy.
But alongside my other journalistic work, I've always been an avid traveler: I'm happiest when I'm exploring a new city, savoring a good meal or hitting the hiking trails around Europe. I love writing about people or places that tell us something bigger about the culture and context in which they're occurring — all as a way to better understand the world around us.
